In a previous comparison, the 2.0 dCi Qashqai lost to the new Ateca, but now a 1.5 diesel version is here to fight back along with the Vauxhall Mokka X.
As far as prices go, the Nissan Qashqai 1.5 dCi 110 Acenta costs a mere £60 more (£21,960) than the Seat Ateca 1.6 TDI 115 Ecomotive SE at £21,900. Bringing up the rear is the £19,865 Mokka X.
Even though the Mokka X is the most affordable model in the lineup, it actually has the most ponies at 134bhp.
But where it’s lacking are in the brakes and clutch feel. WhatCar
felt that there’s little feedback through the brake pedal so drivers will have to concentrate more in stop and go traffic and the clutch is just snatchy. Around bends, the Mokka X just doesn’t have the same confidence the other two models have.
For a bit more fun on country drives the Ateca is a good option with plenty of grip, precise steering, and it corners like a hatchback.
While its fairly firm suspension gives it better handling, it’ll also make passengers feels every bump on the road as they pass. Some may find it to be a fair trade-off for the fun that the Ateca offers. Another potential problem is the cabin noise and there’s plenty of it from the Ateca’s diesel engine.
While there’s nothing really wrong with the Qashqai, its steering feedback could be improved to better compete with the Ateca. Where Qashqai does excel is its running costs and brilliant ride. The 1.5-litre diesel engine has very low CO2 emissions and leasing bills.
Suspension may not be as stiff as the Ateca, but that makes for a smoother ride across poor surfaces and provide you with a more relaxed drive.
The differences between the new Seat Ateca and the Nissan Qashqai are so marginal, it’s really down to what customers value in a vehicle.
