Is this normal? car has just 3000 miles but that air filter is filthy... I just drive in the city, no dust, no long trips... filter on my 17 murano at 10k miles was like new in exact same condition... same for oil. at 3k miles it looks like 30k...

That is pretty nasty.

The air filter can only get dirty from the environment. You were either driving in some really dirty conditions or something in your engine compartment is leaking badly and contaminants were being sucked into your air intake.

Had you changed the oil before? Did you (or dealer) put in the correct oil? The car should be using 0-w20 which is a full synthetic which should not break down like that. Or you would have to be driving in really nasty environment and have total failure of air filter to suck in so much grime. Or the engine must have serious problems to cause the oil to break down like that. Your car looks new so it should be taken back to dealer for warranty. I just hope you did not do any mod or work that may void the warranty.

I'll be checking my oil and air filter at least once a week after see those photos.

PS. I just read your build thread. Could this be related to your K&N air filter? I have never used one. My other car is a 2002 Miata and K&N filters and cold air intakes get discussed to death on miata.net. You may get 1-2 hp, but with more air flow you increase chance of more crap being sucked into the engine including any oil you put on those filters. The stock air filter is rated for up to 36 monthes or 36k km. The irony is that the more clogged your air filter, the better it works to filter out crap (but you will lose performance).
Hey, I read your posts on the UK Qashqai forum. It looks like you had some serious engine problems including misfires which required major rebuild under warranty back in June. Did the dealer not change the oil after the rebuild? Or did all the oil deterioration occur after the rebuild?
The nature of the June-July engine rebuild should be a concern to you. The bad head gasket, intake manifold, fuel pump and injectors could have shortened the life of your engine or catalytic convertor.
I changed out the factory fill @ 6 month/aprx. 2.5k mi. into ownership. The oil felt very thin (like 0w-20 oil, Eneos?) BUT, it was no where as black as yours. Haven't looked at the air filter yet as the car has 6K miles in first yr. So, I can't say an air filter w/10k mi. should look like this? I have never seen an air filter look this sooty in such a short time in any of my other cars that I have owned. I don't know what going on w/your engine.

Same environment when I had my Murano... same route... with even wildfires when we couldn't even breath OEM filter was much cleaner... it just something with this RS...
Dealer did not change the oil, I do that myself, 0-w20 as manual states with OEM filter. I'm going to replace it again soon and if it happens again... well even if dealer changes the oil they are not going to tell me that it is filthy and I don't know if they will ever bother.... #trustissues

Car has only 4000 miles on it and 7 months old. We will see next oil change is coming soon

No engine mods whatsoever, except K&N filter, but mods will not void warranty unless proved it caused the issue.... I see no reason for voiding my warranty to be honest

Hello,

Yeah, car was there for almost 3 weeks rebuilding/replacing intake and all related parts. Dealer did not change the oil, they said it was not necessary at that point since car had only 1500 miles on it and I believe manual says oil change at 5000/6000 miles? So I didn't even consider changing oil or checking it until I hit 3500 miles mark
I'll be monitoring my new filter (which is btw already dirty again) and oil to see if it happens again
Can you guys check your OEM/stock air filter and post pics? or just check oil from the stick and post pics as well with mileage ? I want to see the difference and maybe even go to dealer with a proof that something is wrong with my engine
Kyrgyz, we are only at 900km (540miles). The oil is honey coloured and clear. I must be stupid but i could not open up the air cleaner cover. Picture in the manual looks a bit different from the actual cover. I undid the two metal retaining clips but i could not figure how to open it. It is getting dark and i did not want to break the plastic. Had a heck of a time closing the right retaining clip.

thanks!
you need to remove the resonator that sits on top of the battery, all removed by using a Philips screw driver and just pulling it, nothing really to brake just don't force it too much, it is easy once you figure it out :)
Changing the air filter is a little tricky at first. The plastic air intake from on top of the battery back to the filter housing slides straight up. Along with the two metal clips, there is another plastic clip on the intake and a push-on connection by the battery. No tools needed.
My 2017 Rogue Sport was returned from a six month lease with 8300 miles. I was surprised at how dirty the engine air and cabin air filters were with such low mileage. On a related note--it's hard to access the cabin air filter and it didn't just slide in and out. I have replaced plenty of cabin air filters and some are easier to access than others. But I had to fight this one to get it out and it was almost impossible to get back in. I'm no mechanic but this should have been a lot easier, especially since the filter lacks a metal or plastic frame and would be easy to tear or distort.
Where was the cabin air filter located? I'm going to change out this filter on our 2yr. anniversary w/about 10k miles. Wow, I'm a little surprised your air filter was so dirty! I'll probably take a look at this filter as well.
We tried to make appointment to change oil at 5000 km, but dealer insisted interval should be 8000 km. We changed the oil at 7000 km. The oil on dipstick looked dark. I asked the service manager about this and she said this is normal for first change.
