Mitsubishi is coming out with a rival for the Nissan Qashqai and it's going to be using a name from the dead. The Eclipse.

The Eclipse was originally a coupe, but the model came to an end in 2012.

Now Mitsubishi is developing a new compact crossover to combat the Qashqai. It will be styled after the XR-PHEV concept car that was displayed at the 2015 Geneva show.

So far they've only released a teaser image but you can see the similarities from the side profile.

The concept was two-wheel drive and powered by an unspecified plug-in hybrid powertrain that produced 160bhp and emitted 40g/km of CO2. However, the new SUV is unlikely to be sold with a hybrid powertrain for cost reasons. Instead, the line-up is likely to feature a new turbocharged petrol engine alongside the diesel engines currently found in the ASX range, with manual, CVT and eight-speed automatic transmissions and all-wheel-drive variants available.

I don't see why they would bring back the Eclipse name with a vehicle that's not even in the same segment. Something completely different.

As damaging as it is for the sports coupe we know it does however benefit what could be the biggest thing to happen for Mitsubishi. We all know sporty SUV's are in and kicking it all off by associating a sporty name with history behind it to something that will sell at VOLUME... pleases the ears of all those suits pulling the trigger on this.
